Savannah, GA #4: Bonaventure and Wormsloe

Desserts at Lulu's Chocolate Bar

Savannah can be visited within three days, if your time is limited. Ideally, allow for five days.

On day four, venture further afield to Bonaventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Plantation. If you do not have a car, there is a good day tour that visits both locations. Its pickup location is walkable within the historic district.

Bonaventure Cemetery was made famous by the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. A tour is recommended to appreciate the symbolism, intricate craftsmanship, and quirky forklore behind many of the burial plots. It is a beautiful place.

Our tour stopped at a restaurant for lunch, and then continued to Wormsloe Plantation. The famous oak-lined drive is beautiful and well maintained. The plantation house itself is ruins. Our tour guide walked us around the grounds, explaining its history, including the clever building materials utilized and use of slave labor on the plantation.

Wormsloe functions more like a state park than a plantation site. If you are short on time, it is okay to skip it.

Day tours return by late afternoon, in time for dinner or a show. For small plates, we recommend Jazz’d Tapas Bar. It has good drinks, food, and live music. For dessert, head to Lulu’s Chocolate Bar. It has great desserts and dessert martinis. Reservations are recommended in high season.
