Savannah, GA #5: Tybee and Dolphins

Beneath the Tybee Island beach pavilion, looking through the support beams out at the ocean.

If you have an extra day in Savannah, consider taking a day trip to Tybee Island. Traffic can be busy in the high season, and we highly recommend the half-day Gray Line tour that departs from Savannah. The beachfront district is only a small part of the tour, though you will have some time to wander through its pavilion and handful of touristy shops.

The tour’s first stop is the Tybee Island Lighthouse, whose red-and-white paint is iconic. There is time to climb the few hundred steep steps to the top, if you’d like. Some of the other buildings are interesting, such as the intact staff housing, that tells the story of what that job and lifestyle of a lightkeeper were like.

After lunch comes a dolphin tour. The boat crew was fun and good at what they do. They knew how to encourage the dolphins to play in the boat’s wake, providing lots of up-close viewing.

After the half-day tour, you’ll have time, back in Savannah, to clean up and go to dinner. Check out Top Deck Bar. It has a nice menu, and the views are incredible. We found the restaurant relaxing to just grab a few small plates and admire the scenery. We particularly enjoyed the Georgia Spring Roll with pulled pork and collard greens.
