Savannah, GA #2: Museums and City Market

Outside of the Owens Thomson House museum

After getting the tour on the first day, spend the second going to a few house museums.

Start the day with a hearty breakfast, such as Maple Street Biscuit Company or Southern Rise Biscuit, which both have sweet and savory options.

Then, walk to a house museum in the historic district. By walking, you’ll get a closer look at the beauty and the history of the squares, such as Johnson Square and Wright Square. Of the many historic house tours in the area, we recommend the Owens-Thomas House. It shares thorough perspectives of living during the time period, including the experiences of both city residents and the urban slaves in Savannah.

For lunch, we highly recommend the Olde Pink House. The food is amazing, and we recommend that you make reservations as soon as you can. You also can visit for dinner, but lunch can be a little less expensive and a refreshing break. You can get dinner at the bar without a reservation, that is first come first served. We happened to catch the lunch service at the end and were able to be seated at an outdoor table nestled in a garden. The menu changes seasonally, and you can’t go wrong.

After lunch, visit one of the Telfair museums, either the Telfair Academy or the Jepson Center. The Jepson Center has more contemporary art and rotating exhibits. We personally thought it could be skipped. Instead, go to the Academy, an art museum housed in a historic building. It was interesting to explore and learn. It also houses the iconic “Bird Girl” statue from the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We tend to focus on history and appreciated learning about the house itself.

Walk to the City Market area and take your pick of a place to eat. There is a local wine shop there, where you can grab a cocktail to carry along on your walk. On the way there, pass by the First African Baptist Church and learn about its history. Tonight also can be a good evening to enjoy of the ghost tours. Savannah is full of them, and if there is a place that you are going to do one, this is it.
